The Candle Maker's Petition

By Frederic Bastiat

The Candle Maker's Petition is one of Frederic Bastiat's most famous works. A brilliant piece of satire reminiscent of Johnathan Swift, it shows the problems of not only protectionism but also of many of the policies that many politicians use to further their own interests. It also shows the tangled web that many use to justify their actions. A very entertaining listen, you are sure to enjoy it.

The Candle Maker's Petition was originally published a part of Bastiat's collection of essays: "Economic Sophisms" published in 1845.

Since it is only about 10 minutes long, the Candle Maker's Petition is a great introduction to Bastiat's work. (His most famous and brilliant work is is book The Law and is highly recommended. It is sure to be one of the books that changes) The Candle Maker's Petition is short enough (around 1.7MB) that you can easily send it by e-mail to your friends or others who might be interested.
